Fire Prevention Day at Edna Beaman School

The White Mountain Fire Department  spent Monday with the kids from Edna Beaman School in Benton to kick off Fire Prevention Week, which will take place from October 6 to October 12, 2024. Firefighter/EMT Renae Kaiser, Firefighter James Janney, and Firefighter Bryan Kaiser discussed fire safety and the tools that firefighters use to keep everyone safe.

This year's theme for Fire Prevention Week 2024 is "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!" The theme emphasizes the importance of working smoke alarms in a fire, as they can provide people and pets with the time needed to escape safely. Along with having working smoke alarms, it's crucial to have a home escape plan and to know how to exit quickly in an emergency.

Here are some tips for smoke alarm safety:
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on each level of the home, including the basement.
- Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button.
- Replace smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or if they fail to respond during testing.

Fire Prevention Week is observed annually to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871.

Thanks to our fantastic crew for taking the time to raise awareness about safety!
